Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Many of you have probably heard about "anti-inflammatory diets". To sum it up, the purpose of anti-inflammatory diets is to avoid inflammation within the body that is believed to be the cause of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and colon cancer. The common contributing factors to this type of inflammation are too many calories, too much saturated fat, too much sugar and refined carbs, high omega-6 to omega–3 ratio, and high sodium to potassium ratio. To put it simply, eating too much too often is the main cause of this type of inflammation.

A lot of foods that are sources of inflammatory imbalances promote overeating by triggering neurochemical responses that hyperstimulate our appetites. For example, consider how a plate of celery and carrot sticks affects your appetite compared to the same plate filled with fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. When you start eating the celery and carrot sticks, after a few you've had enough. But with cookies (each of which has 10-20 times more calories than the celery/carrot sticks), the more you eat, the more you want until you're really full. Some examples of these foods are: cookies, white breads, deep fried foods, hamburgers, pie, pizza, pasta, soft drinks, and many more. It is important to know that small amounts of foods that cause inflammation will not nulify the affect of a mainly anti-inflammatory meal. An example would be a packet of sugar and a pat of butter on a large bowl of oatmeal. On the other hand, foods that down-regulate inflammation may lose some or all of their benefit if they are prepared incorrectly. A good example is battered, deep-fried vegetables.

Some foods that are generally considered anti-inflammatory are: acai, apples, apricots, asparagus, banans, beans, broccoli, cucumbers, cantaloupe, carrots, mushrooms, raw nuts, salmon, spinach, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, tuna, and many more. Anti-inflammatory diets are simply just a healthier way of eating, which can make a big difference for your health in the future.
